The Handpicked Standard: My 7-Point "No-Compromise" Checklist

Every bike I buy must pass my personal "sniff test" before it ever gets a valet or a listing. If it fails one of these, I don't buy it. Period.

1. The "Paper Trail" Test

A bike is only as good as its history. I look for a continuous service record—not just stamps, but invoices that show a previous owner who cared about preventative maintenance, not just fixing things when they broke.

2. Originality Check

I prefer bikes that haven't been "got at." While quality exhausts or luggage are great, I steer clear of bikes with cheap aftermarket levers, "shady" wiring for accessories, or DIY tail-tidies that have ruined the loom.

3. Consumables Audit

I check the "hidden" costs. Are the chain and sprockets hooked? Are the tires squared off or aging? Are the brake pads down to the metal? If a bike arrives with me, it arrives ready to ride—not ready for a £500 service bill.

4. No "Winter Grime" Corrosion

UK winters are brutal on bikes. I inspect the engine casings, fastener heads, and swingarm pivots for salt corrosion or neglect. If it’s been sat in a damp shed or ridden through road salt without a wash, it’s a "no" from me.

5. HPI & Finance Clear

Total peace of mind. Every bike is 100% HPI clear, with no hidden insurance write-offs (Cat C/D/S/N) and no outstanding finance.

6. The "Cold Start" Reality

I always insist on seeing a bike start from stone-cold. I’m listening for cam-chain rattle, hunting idles, or any smoke that shouldn't be there. If the owner "warmed it up for me" before I arrived, I get suspicious.

7. My 50-Mile Road Test

A bike can look stunning on a paddock stand and handle like a shopping trolley on the road. I personally ride every bike to ensure the gearbox is slick, the brakes are sharp, and the tracking is true.
